OH MY GOD THIS IS GOLD. Jung realises that he does care for her. He's been watching her so closely. The way she acted at the beginning of the chapter (he thinks she's like everyone else) to hiding her pain behind a smile when she was sick.

Dear lord, he's slowly caring for her in ways she couldn't imagine. He's slowly changing because of her. He can't figure her out, but in a way she's so similar to him in so many ways: problems with family, struggling to keep their feelings/problems in check in front of others, being used by others, ect.
He sees that she's strong and capable as a person and a person who he formerly hated and held with contempt is someone so different when they interacted with each other filled with misunderstands and missteps.
He knows that she's a caring person and he is too, but shows it in very subtle ways. Arg, they are so damn perfect for each other! I can't even-
